Chase Away the Winter Blues at Keukenhof

[2007-04-22] The most beautiful spring gardens in the world are open for a few months each year. This year, they were open from 23/03/07 until 20/05/2007. We spent 5,5 hours in this 32-hectare eden, enjoying the flowers, smells, sights and sounds, with seemingly, millions of other people.

Some facts about Keukenhof:

  • The name Keukenhof came about in the 15th century, when the area belonged to Countess Jacoba of Beieren, and was used for hunting and to collect herbs for the "kitchen of the court"
  • The original design was made by Zocher, a landscaper from Haarlem, in 1850
  • The idea for this garden came in 1949 by flower bulb gardeners and exporters, to display their flowers to customers
  • 7 million flower bulbs are planted each year, with 600 types of tulips, together with daffodils, hyacinths, crocusses and more, in various layers to make sure that flowers blossom throughout Spring
  • Visitors can amble along 15km paths that meander through the gardens, enjoying 2665 trees of 87 different species, the art pieces strategically placed, 32 little bridges to cross, pavillions with indoor plants to investigate
  • When it gets too much, visitors can relax on 280 benches or peruse refreshment in five restaurants, shopping in six souvenir shops and five flower bulb outlets

Visit the Keukenhof website for more information and photographs.
